Songs about Recognizing Your Beauty

16. True Colors

The first time I heard this song was in a Dove ad (which I featured in my amazing commercials post; see commercial #12 in the list). I was enchanted by the song and the beautiful child vocals. I later realized the song in the ad was a cover, with the original version by Cyndi Lauper.

“True Colors” is about not feeling fearful or small and showing who you really are to the world. “True colors” mentioned in the lyrics is an analogy to the colors of the rainbow. By revealing your true self, you reveal your real beauty.

And here is a beautiful cover by One Voice Children’s Choir:

17. Beautiful

“Beautiful” is a very powerful Christina Aguilera song that won a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2004 and was also nominated for Song of the Year that year. The song tells you that you are beautiful, no matter what others say. Even though there can be bullies, friends who try to fill their emptiness by putting you down and/or subjecting you to societal benchmarks, you are beautiful in every single way. This applies not just to physical looks, but also your sexuality. You don’t have to look or be a certain way to be considered beautiful, and the music video conveys this strongly.

The song has been widely embraced as an anthem by the LGBT community for its message of self-empowerment and inner beauty.[3] Read: How To Develop a Positive Body Image (series)

18. Just The Way You Are

A reader introduced me to this song during the 15-Day Affirmation Challenge back in 2014, and I absolutely love it. “Just The Way You Are” is a great reminder that you are beautiful (whether you are a girl or guy, even though the song’s lyrics are targeted at girls), just the way you are. If perfection is what you are looking for, then don’t change anything about yourself, because you are already perfect. This song is Bruno Mars’ debut single and won a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2011.

19. What Makes You Beautiful

While a somewhat teenybopper song, this song has a great and simple message: for girls to recognize their beauty. Many girls today are sadly insecure about their looks and this is largely an effect of a beauty industry that thrives off creating an idealized beauty image and making women believe that they need to adhere to this image to be considered beautiful. You don’t need makeup or stylish clothes to be beautiful. As the song goes, “Being the way that you are is enough.” Read: The Beauty of Self – Why I Used To Feel Inferior about My Looks and Why I No Longer Feel That Way
