As you probably know, the current version of iTunes is not compatible with Windows XP. Support for Windows XP (and Vista) was dropped when Apple released iTunes 12.2. The latest (and almost certainly last) version to support XP is 12.1.3.6 – this is an out-of-sequence release from September 2015 that adds support for iOS 9 devices but lacks Apple Music and other features added in iTunes 12.2 and 12.3.

The article below is targeted for advanced users. It presents several ways how to install iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad drivers on your machine running Windows XP 64 bit. We would like to say a special Thanks to Richard Simpson for creating the tutorial and to Yukichigai for setting the initial procedure.

  1. Download iTunes v12.1.3.6 (64 bit) (for older video cards).

  2. iOS 7 and iOS 8 users

In order for the PC to correctly recognize your device, you need to have at least iTunes 11. Since this version is not available for the 64-bit version of Windows XP, the below instructions may not work for you.
  3. Using 7-zip or WinRAR, extract the contents of the iTunes installer

  4. Download Microsoft Orca (2.4 MB) and install it. SuperOrca (1.9 MB) looks promising but we haven’t tested

  5. Edit AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi with Orca

  6. – Locate the extracted iTunes files, right-click “AppleMobleDeviceSupport64.msi” and select “Edit with ORCA”

    – In the left pane select “Launch Condition”, in the right pane select the condition:
“(VersionNT=501 And ServicePackLevel>=2) Or VersionNT>=600” and edit the 600 at the end with 501 so it reads like this: “(VersionNT=501 And ServicePackLevel>=2) Or VersionNT>=501”

    – Save and Exit Orca. This is necessary to enable AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi to install in Windows XP 64-bit

  7. Install AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi and ignore the unsigned driver warning

  8. Edit QuickTime.msi

  9. – Create a shortcut of “QuickTime.msi”

    – Right-click on it and select properties

    – Add: -passive /promptrestart to the end of “Target”
(The complete target should look like:
“c:MyLocationSomeDirQuickTime.msi” -passive /promptrestart. Please note that you should have a space after the .msi” and before the -passive /promptrestart)

  10. Install the QuickTime.msi shortcut

  11. Install AppleApplicationSupport.msi

  12. Plug in your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad

  13. Change the device driver for the iPhone in Device Manager

– Open Device Manager, expand “Imaging Devices”, right-click the “Apple iPhone” entry and select “Properties”

– Select the driver tab, select and click the “Update Driver” button

– Select “No, not this time” when prompted to connect to Windows Update and click Next

– On the next screen, select “Install from a list or specific location” and click Next

– On the next screen, select “Don’t search…” and click Next

– The next screen should show you two entries, “Digital Still Camera” and “Apple Mobile Device USB Driver”. (or similar) Select “Apple Mobile Device USB Driver” and click Next

– On the next screen, select “Continue Anyway”

We had to do this step for each iPhone model; once for an iPhone 4 and once again for an iPhone 3GS. Repeating this step for an existing model phone will no longer show two driver selections but only the “Digital Still Camera”. But you can verify the iPhone is set up properly in Device Manager by expanding Universal Serial Bus controllers at the bottom of the list and seeing the first entry listed as “Apple Mobile Device USB Driver”.
